What to Write in a Wedding Thank You Card

Wedding thank you cards are the last job of the wedding and the one couples most often let slide. Here is the timeline, the formula, and wording for the situations that are harder than they look.

How long do you have?

Three months is the figure usually quoted. In practice people are forgiving, especially if you have been on honeymoon. Past six months the note starts reading as an apology rather than a thank you.

The trick that actually works: print the cards before the wedding. Writing them is a small job; finding, buying and organising the cards afterwards is the part that never happens.

The four-line formula

  1. Thank them for the specific gift.
  2. Say how you have used it or will use it.
  3. Mention their presence at the wedding.
  4. Sign off from both of you.

“Thank you so much for the roasting dish. We have already used it twice and it has made us feel disturbingly grown up. It meant a lot to have you both there on the day. Love, Anna and Tom.”

That is the whole thing. Four lines, thirty seconds, and it does not read as a form letter.

For a cash gift

Name what it is going towards, never the amount:

  • Thank you for your very generous gift. It is going straight towards the kitchen we have been talking about for two years.
  • Your gift is funding three days of our honeymoon in Lisbon, and we will think of you in every restaurant.

For a group gift

Send individual cards rather than one to the group. Each person chose to contribute:

  • Thank you for being part of the garden furniture. We have been outside every evening since.

For someone who could not attend

  • Thank you for the vase, which has pride of place. We missed you on the day and hope to see you soon.

For someone who gave no gift

Thank them for coming. Plenty of guests spent a great deal to be there:

  • Thank you for travelling all that way to be with us. Having you there was the gift.

For your wedding party

These deserve longer. Name what they actually did rather than thanking them generically for being a bridesmaid:

  • Thank you for the hen weekend, for the safety pin at 3pm, and for not letting me see the seating chart. I could not have done any of it without you.

For vendors

Optional, and worth doing for anyone who went beyond the contract. A short note plus an online review is worth more to a small business than the note alone.

Splitting the list

Divide it by who knows the person better, and sign both names on every card regardless of who wrote it. Doing them in batches of ten over a few evenings works better than blocking out a whole Sunday, which nobody ever completes.

Keep a list of who gave what as gifts arrive. Reconstructing it three weeks later from memory and a pile of cards is genuinely difficult.

Printing your cards

Our wedding thank you card templates are editable in Canva, with photo and text-only layouts. Print a full set at once on 250 to 300 gsm cardstock, folded so the inside stays blank for handwriting.

A photo from the day on the front makes the card more likely to be kept, and it doubles as the only wedding photo most guests will ever have. See the printing guide for paper and settings, and wedding printables for matching designs across the rest of the stationery.
