Printable Birthday Cards

A shop-bought birthday card costs five or six dollars and says something generic. A template costs less, takes ten minutes to personalize, and lets you write exactly what you want on the front as well as the inside.

These designs are built as folding cards, so you print one sheet, fold it once, and have a card with a blank inside for your handwritten message.

What to write in a birthday card

Most people freeze at the blank inside. A structure that works: open with a greeting, add one specific memory or observation about the person, add a wish for the year ahead, and sign off. “Happy birthday Anna. Still thinking about that terrible karaoke night in March. Hope this year brings more of exactly that. Love, Sam.”

Printable birthday card questions

What size should I print a birthday card?

A5 folded from an A4 sheet is the most common, and fits a standard C5 envelope. 5x7 folded from letter paper is the US equivalent and fits an A7 envelope.

What paper works best?

Cardstock between 200 and 300 gsm. Lighter than that and the card will not stand up on a mantelpiece. Matte holds ink better than gloss on a home printer.

How do I print double sided?

Most designs put the front and back on one sheet so you only fold, no double sided printing needed. If a design has a printed inside, use your printer's duplex setting or flip the sheet manually and print page two.

Can I add a photo?

Yes. Upload it in Canva and drop it into any image frame, or place it on a blank area of the design.

Can I send it digitally instead?

Yes. Export as a JPG and send it by message. It arrives instantly, which is useful when you have forgotten until the morning of.
