Nautical Party Printables

Nautical is navy, white and rope, with anchors, sailboats, knots and the occasional whale. It is a summer theme with a long history, and it has the useful property of being instantly legible to everyone at the party without any explanation.

All editable in Canva.

Nautical versus coastal

Worth distinguishing, because they photograph very differently.

Nautical is graphic and high contrast: navy, red, crisp white, stripes, anchors, rope borders. It suits children's parties, baby showers and casual summer events.

Coastal is softer: sand, seafoam, driftwood, watercolour waves, no anchors at all. It suits beach weddings and adult gatherings where the nautical version would feel like a costume.

Where it works

  • Baby showers with an ahoy-it's-a-boy leaning
  • Children's birthdays, particularly sailing and pirate crossovers
  • Summer parties, boat parties and lake weekends
  • Retirement parties for anyone with a boat
  • Beach weddings, using the coastal end of the range

Nautical theme questions

What are the core colours?

Navy and white as the base, with red as the traditional accent. Swapping red for gold or sage moves it towards coastal.

Is nautical only for boys?

The navy-and-red version has been used that way for years, but navy with white and sage, or with blush, works for any baby shower.

Will large navy areas print well?

Solid navy uses a lot of ink and can band on a home inkjet. For designs with heavy dark backgrounds, use a print shop or pick a design with navy as an accent rather than a full background.

What paper should I use?

Bright white matte 250 to 300 gsm. Cream undercuts the crispness that makes nautical work.

Can I use it outdoors?

Yes, and it suits it. For signs by water or on a boat, print on foam board rather than paper, since humidity warps card quickly.
