Printable Cupcake Toppers

Cupcake toppers turn a tray of supermarket cupcakes into something that matches the rest of the party. They take about twenty minutes to make and cost almost nothing.

All editable in Canva, printed many to a sheet.

How to make them

  1. Print on 200 to 250 gsm cardstock.
  2. Cut out the circles. A 2 inch circle punch makes this considerably faster than scissors if you are doing more than a dozen.
  3. Glue two circles back to back with a toothpick between them, so both sides are printed.
  4. Push into the cupcake once the icing has set.

Two inches is the standard diameter. Larger than that and the topper tips over on a standard cupcake.

Cupcake topper questions

What size should they be?

Two inches across. This fits a standard cupcake without overhanging.

What paper should I use?

200 to 250 gsm cardstock. Thinner paper bends as soon as it meets icing.

Do I need to print both sides?

Print two copies and glue them back to back with the toothpick between. Guests see the toppers from all around the table.

Is the paper food safe?

The topper sits on the icing rather than in it, and standard printer ink is not intended for consumption. Keep it out of the cake itself and remove it before eating.

How far ahead can I make them?

Days ahead. Make them in advance and push them in on the day, once the icing has set.

Can I use them on other food?

Yes. They work on brownies, cake pops, doughnuts and sandwich platters as small labels.
