The timeline display
Eight decades laid out on a board with a photo and one line per decade. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren tend to stand in front of it for a long time, because most of it is news to them. It costs about fifteen dollars to print at a shop and is usually the most looked-at thing in the room.

How far ahead should invitations go out?
Six to eight weeks by post, since much of the guest list will not be reachable any other way.
What time of day works best?
Early afternoon. A lunch or afternoon tea suits both the guest of honour and any great-grandchildren in the room.
How long should it run?
Two to three hours. Long enough for a meal and speeches, short enough that it stays comfortable.
What should I do about accessibility?
Large print on everything, seating for everyone rather than standing room, and a venue with step-free access and a toilet on the same floor. It matters more than any decoration on this list.
What is a good keepsake?
A memories book from cards guests fill in. Print them on cardstock so they survive being kept.
