Children's parties run on a tight schedule and a shorter attention span than anyone plans for. These templates cover the invitation, the decorations and — most usefully — the hour in the middle that has to be filled with something.

All editable in Canva, so one design works for a fourth birthday and an eighth.

A rough running order

Fifteen minutes for arrivals with a colouring sheet on the table. Half an hour of games. Twenty minutes for food. Cake and singing. Fifteen minutes of free play while parents arrive. Two hours total, which is the point at which most children under eight have had enough.

Kids birthday questions

How long should a children's party be?

Ninety minutes for under-fives, two hours for five to ten. Put the end time on the invitation.

How many games do I need?

Three or four short ones plus a spare. Games run shorter than you expect, especially with a large group.

Should prizes go only to winners?

At younger ages, no. Something for everyone avoids the tears that otherwise arrive around the second game.

Printed or digital invitations?

Digital in the class group chat reaches every parent and cannot be lost in a book bag. Print a few for anyone not in the chat.

What should I print games on?

Ordinary printer paper. Cardstock only for anything being kept, like party bag tags.

Can I change the theme colours?

Yes. Everything is editable, so a design can be matched to whatever the child is currently obsessed with.
